One of the student activities for students in the Raymond B. Jones School of Engineering at Lipscomb University is the Baja SAE program, part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series. The Baja SAE competition is a worldwide competition hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), in which teams design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. Lipscomb will be entering the Baja East competition.

The object of the competition is to provide a challenging project for the students that involves the planning and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product into the consumer industrial market. Teams compete against each other to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to build, test, promote, and race a vehicle as well as generating the finances required for this project. The teams will be judged on the quality of their car's design as well as their car's performance in several categories including a log pull, a maneuverability course, a suspension course, and an endurance race. Unique to the Baja East region, the car also has to have flotation capability and be able to maneuver in water.

Baja SAE includes more than just the race; prior to the competition a design and cost report must be submitted to SAE officials. These reports will be judged on uniqueness of design, innovation, suspension, floatation, braking, drive-train, and maintainability/serviceability; the cost report being judged on the total cost of the prototype, as well as accurate documentation of funds.
